May, but basically just for the final pay off.
The Shining, for the bar scene mostly.
Eraser Head for the atmosphere

Dead End had some decent moments. The reveal of the corpse baby, and the lead up to that, the crying on the radio.

Event Horizon

> Rosemary's Baby

Too predictable to be particularly spooky. Case in point: the scrabble tile scene. We all knew what the anagram was going to be, so all her tries were basically filler. It may have worked if the tiles lead her down a false path or something.

For suspense to work either the audience knows what's going on and the characters dont or the characters know the audience doesnt.

If no one knows then it's just confusing, and if everyone knows then it's just boring.

Im sure you could list an exception to the rule, but I think that generally is how it tends to work.

Quite a bit of The Grifter was shot in South East London, they say a lot of the evidence went down with some of the demolished tower blocks / council estates.
>>

Mulholland Drive just for the restaurant scene.

FFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUU
>>
>>14886624
The Strangers is one of the best. Very simple plot and very effective horror.
>>
>Nobody ever posts Poughkeepsie Tapes in these threads
>>
>>14886592
The conjuring was the worst and i can give you two undisputable reasons why.

1. Its technically rated pg-13

2. NO ONE DIES.
>>
For me, a grown ass man. The last and ONLY movie that really spooked me.

The strangers.

Something about it just freaked me the fuck out. That is, until the end. Once the masks come off the movie goes straight to shit. The explanations are shit. The mystery is lost. Everything its kill. What a waste. Oh well, i'll always have the first half.
>>
>>14888614
dude you best be trolling or twelve.
just because someone doesn't die doesn't make a horror movie bad.

i personally think the poughkeepsie tapes aren't the kind of creepy most people want, it has some serious fucked up shit in there, but it's not the kind of sitting-on-the-edge-of-your-seat shit people look for in movies. the whole documentary thing also takes away a bit of the creepiness.
>>
>>14888595
that's because it's garbage
>>
>>14888595
That is probably the spookiest movie I've seen because I watched it when I was like 16 and thought it was a real documentary.
>>
>>14888614
The dog died
>>
>>14888595
>tfw saw that and showed it to friend who were "horror fanatics"
they had to turn it off 30 minutes in
>>
>>14886928
idk I thought rosemary's baby was more of a horror comedy than a straight horror picture.

I like it, it's silly. The rape scene seems like it's trying to be ridiculous, but maybe I'm wrong.
>>
>>14888646
What makes a horror movie?

What good horror movies do you know that,

A) are pg-13
B) are pleb in nature, made for high school audience
C) have no blood
D) over utilizes jump scares to hide the fact that they have no atmosphere
E) lazily rips off two popular current fanchises
F) and no one fucking dies

The conjuring is 14 year old shit. You should feel bad for listing it
>>
>>14886928

>Look at me mom, I'm being contrarian on the internet!
>>
>>14888595

Maybe because it's not spooky? It's mostly a 2 hour wankfest over how "genius" the serial killer is. And a lot of his "genius" comes from plot armor and apparent psychic powers.

>>14888647

I watched it because of this gif; it was the only real creepy part of the movie.

I guess recaptcha liked it though: terioror 100
>>
>>14888674
ah so you are trolling. eh 3/10 for effort.
granted I'm not saying the conjuring was great. Just your reasons for what makes a good horror movie is shit.
>>
>>14888663

Poughkeepsie Tapes is tame as fuck. What horror movies were your lame ass friends fanatical about, exactly?
>>
Silent Hill
Night of the living dead(90's version)
Martyrs

Insidious[1].jpg
116KB, 800x1200px
I was pleasantly surprised with the Insidious movies, especially the first one. It's got some typical mainstream Hollywood horror issues but nothing glaring. All in all it's a pretty solid ghost story that derives its scariness from the ghosts and haunting aspect instead of cheap gore and jump scares.
>>
>>14888686
It's a damn shame too. It could have been a decent story. It could have good. The presentation of the movie is just awful. The documentary format really doesn't do it any favors. All the good actors were used for the 'tapes'. The rest of the people, which fill the bulk of the movie, just make me want to do anything else but watch them.
>>
>>14888691

The original Night of the Living Dead was legit. Decades ahead of its time.

More interesting for those who like zombie apocalypse or survival movies then just creepiness though.

Ju-On fucked with me pretty hard. By the time I got done watching it, the sun was coming up. I figured I'd go to bed after a quick pee. My bathroom was the only room that did not get natural light. So I said fuck that and pissed out back with the dogs.

the only part i really found scary was the girl on skype walking around the house with her eyes closed

and the blurry dude in the woods just reminded me of watch dogs when you try to look at yourself through a video camera

definitely a good movie though
>>
Eh the first VHS was shit. The second one actually had its moments. Also my personal favorite scary movie is IT but that's from nostalgia more than anything. Session 9 is good, also that movie about the ghost in the WiFi was good

The entire film is here if anyone wants to watch it:

This was pretty spooky.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sWCWKXB1Oxw
It's a mix of haunted high school & found footage, very little jump scares and it relies almost entirely on the atmosphere to spook you.

This is one is just fucked-up weird.

Yeah, no thanks. I'm never taking /x/'s movie recommendations seriously again. Did it have talented writing? Yes. Skillful acting? You bet. Lesbo sex scenes? To your heart's content. However it couldn't have been any LESS scary. This movie is more like a drama with a small hint of thriller than horror.
>>
>>14890962
that movie is fucked up.... it's ten times creepier too because it's animation and not real actors... Someone had to draw those scenes. That gets me.

Grave Encounters is a total gem of a horror movie. My wife and I queued it up one night on Netflix when we were bored and it totally scared the shit out of both of us. They totally nailed the atmosphere in that movie and the jump scares were really well done.

The sequel, though? it was total shit. no surprise there.

even though it's not a proper movie, the first 40 or so episodes of Marble Hornets were fucking horrifying. I didn't sleep in the dark for a week after I binge-watched it.

Are you serious? you need to see blood to enjoy a movie?

How about Insidious? Insidious was a fantastic movie, involving the whole astral projection and out of body experience thing. The whole atmosphere that was set throughout the film made it an amazing movie.

Chapter 2 was just as amazing.

I know what you're saying in a sense, because it pisses me off when a potentially great movie isn't that great because they made it PG-13 and took out violence or cursing, when there was obviously supposed to be violence or profanity for that scene.

But sometimes, you find those awesome gems that know how to make those certain scenes still really have an impact on your while still being PG-13.

1979 'Salem's Lot when it came out on Channel 9 when I was 4.
I managed to convince my mom to let me stay up and watch it.
Big mistake.
Not only did the movie scare me, but this scene in particular did me in later that night when my older brother (who was 13 at the time) decided to re-enact it for me.

I liked Grave Encounters. The second one was decent, but the beginning and end were both irritatingly bad. I think the part that scared me most was the hotel/elevator. The maid freaked me the fuck out.

The Strangers was really well done, made me scared to be alone in the house for a while. I liked The Poughkeepsie Tapes, and I liked Quarantine, though the protagonist was annoying. I haven't seen [REC]. I'm curious to see if it's better.

I have a thing for found footage films. It's a shame so many of them are as lame as they are.

It's not really a "scary" movie, it's pretty much just seeing how far they can take the goreporn genre.
A porn director gives a man bull pheromones to make him do crazy shit. I remember there was a scene where he raped his wife and son. Another scene in which a woman gives birth, and then they allude to newborn porn.
>>
Does nobody remember "The House at the End of the Road"?

Like, it wasn't SUPER SCARY 2SPOOKY, but it was interesting.

It sold itself as a dumb jumpscare slasher flick for like the entirety of the movie.
And then the plot twist is that it's actually not a slasher film, but a Hitchcockian Silence of the Lambs thriller.
Given that it was advertising itself as a tween make out movie and had that one girl from the Hunger Games, I was actually kind of impressed at the route it took.

I posted this on /tv/ but have yet to receive a response. I'm trying to remember a film I once saw the cover of.

I'm pretty sure I saw at a video store in the mid 90s. It was some sort of creature feature and I was pretty sure it had Wayne Knight (Dennis from JP) on the cover but I cannot find it on his Wiki. I remember the back cover showing that the creature was eating people's stomachs or something. The cover had who I thought to be Knight sitting at a desk, turned around and looking at the creature.

Any ideas?

What if one of those people was you, and you're with 2 fucking dipshits that you just realize you hate. You're lost in the woods. It's before cellphones, so no calls. There's something following you all day so that it can attack the shit out of you at night, so you can't sleep. You have no food, so you can't eat.
