I'm unsure of Matlab requirements, but I recently helped a friend buy a basic laptop for LoL and general office programs.
LoL doesn't require much; these specs run LoL at max settings (such as they are):
- i5-2410
- Radeon 6490m or Geforce 630M
- 4GB PC3 RAM
Pretty basic stuff.

Matlab will be the least of the problems, or a major problem regarding of a mission.
Generally, Matlab can serve you as a package to outline the real issues for which you'll need something like Abacus/Ansys environment to create a valid FEA/FEM to proceed with let's say a non-linear model. (non-linear models ofc start with linear equatons having as many equations as there is unknowns)
Matlab can be used for fun, too. Tracking for objects like how many little birds visit your garden, counting the amount of vegetation colors in your garden, etc.
