What genre would this be under? I know, it's technically science-fiction/fantasy, but I'm talking about the category of a broad story focused on a royal or otherwise powerful family and their high place in their respective world.
Epic isn't quite the word for it, and family drama strikes me as way too small-scale for the exact atmosphere I'm looking for.
Dune would also somewhat cover what I'm looking for.

I've never heard any particular term for such a story. TVTropes seems to call it "Ruler Protagonist", though that's a bit narrow. I tried searching various write ups on various plays by Shakespeare, since if such a term existed you'd think it'd get applied to them first and foremost, but no dice.
If you're looking for more such stories, maybe try crossing "political drama" with "feudal society" or something?
Or maybe try going through "Standard Royal Court"

Have you read the Vorkosigan Saga?

Only in passing, but I've heard good things. Considering my fascination with the subject now's a good time to break into it.
And thank you for looking so thoroughly. Digging into Shakespeare was very smart thinking. I agree Political Drama might be the closest term there is.
We called this "Family Saga" in school. The biggest example is "Buddenbrooks".
Most definining elements are the depiction of multiple generations over many years of time, and the fact that you need a fucking character map and list to keep track of the relationships and names.
