Kino no Tabi is more similar to Haibane Renmei in tone and themes than any other anime in this thread. It doesn't have your large cute girls cast but I can't imagine anybody that likes Haibane Renmei disliking Kino no Tabi. It's rare that 2 unrelated anime hit the same notes the way those 2 do. Aria comes close as well. I suggest you try these two before the others listed in this thread.

I wouldn't say non non biyori has a story per se, though it is one of my favorite and is what inspired me to visit japan. (story is overrated.)
