The best thing you can do on Pixiv is add 00 or 000 to your search.

Pixiv has its own Bookmarking feature, and the best images tend to (but not always) get Bookmarked heavily. So adding 00 means at least 100 people like an image enough to Bookmark it. (000 means at least a thousand people, of course.)
You're bound to find some top quality artists this way.

E.g., KanColle pics with at least 10,000 Bookmarks:
https://www.pixiv.net/search.php?word=艦これ+0000

If you're looking for a specific series, just change the first tag to something else. E.g.:
>fate 000

On a side note, add -r-18 if you want to exclude lewd.

On another side note: keep an eye on the Global Rankings. You might find the occasional treasure. (The home page, on the right.)

Not the OP, but do those tricks only work on pixiv itself? (On many websites typing "blah site:example.com" into Google or - my personal choice - DuckDuckGo works better than the site's own shoddy search-funtion.)

Pixiv's search works just fine.
Really, its main flaw is that compared to booru sites (Danbooru, etc.) it has severely limited tagging. But it's good enough to find the highest quality images using 000.
