My cousin asked me to revive her decade old laptop.
What's a good lightweight distro that a normie would find easy to use? (LibreOffice, VLC, Browser)

I was thinking Puppy or Lubuntu, or maybe even Remix OS.

What if I install it (No Live USB)? Will it still run on RAM?

PS: I moved this from /g/.

Also which is the best version of Puppy? (Tahr? Wary? Precise?)

Windows 10. It's the lightest Windows since XP, yet it has modern features like security updates, an app store, composited desktop

>I was thinking Puppy
Jesus christ, no. Puppy is an OS creation kit for embedded and appliances. It's not easy to use, and it's not for beginners or "normies". It has a filesystem based on overlays (which sticks two fingers up at FHS), and a very strange approach to persistence.

The first time your cousin loses their dissertation because they forgot to tell Puppy that when they saved it they didn't mean "just save it until I switch the computer off", they will hate you forever.

We're talking about really old hardware here. Windows is out of the question.

XFCE or even LXDE

There are XFCE spins for pretty much every distro

Fedora
https://spins.fedoraproject.org/xfce/
https://spins.fedoraproject.org/lxde/

ubuntu->Xubuntu/ Lubuntu
https://xubuntu.org/
http://lubuntu.net/

Arch, install the desktop yourself
https://www.archlinux.org/
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/XFCE
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/LXDE

LXDE is said to be the least ressource hungry version. but according to
https://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-desktop-74/lxde-vs-xfce-899327/ it is not really that much lighter than XFCE.

No idea how well XFCE will run because you gave NO fucking specs.

For puppy linux choose Slackware. It's really primitive though and has problems everytime i want to do something. Either pick winXp and update it completely (still security issues i guess) or Lubuntu/Xubuntu
Recently tried Lubuntu. It's an OS from Ubuntu family but more lighter and has windows-like look. Have no problems so far
