can anyone identify these pieces of wood? I think they are some sort of mahogany, but i'm not sure. Are they genuine? Or some other species simply marketed as mahogany?

the right one is not solid, but normal wood / whatever covered by a thin layer of the reddish wood.

Anyway, the grain, growth pattern, overall color and that one small knot on the left resembles like plain figured Khaya or blond Sapele. Those are both sold as "African mahogany". Both have quite a variation in grain patterns and color tone, the plain ones often ending as top veneers in packaging plywood.
Take a pic of the end grain of the boards. That'll secure a lot.
