Hi, I had a horrible GPA in HS (1.13) and i never got past Geometry.

This is a blue board which means that it's for everybody (Safe For Work content only). If you see any adult content, please report it.

Hi, I had a horrible GPA in HS (1.13) and i never got past Geometry. I tested into Calculus 1. What are MUST-know concepts for success in CALC1, and general college tips?
>>
Calculus 1 is all derivatives. Basically, you take a formula and figure out an equation for how fast it increases. Must need knowledge is how to do basic algebra, what trigonometric functions do, and maybe some basic trig identities (like sin^2 + cos^2 = 1)

Check if there is a pre-calculus course and learn the material. You may also check the books for your course and if they start from the beginning or if they have some prerequisites.

For example, check the first chapter of this book and try to solve the odd-numbered exercises (there are solutions for these).

Two words: CHAIN RULE

When deriving the other rules are pretty easy to get and keep in mind, you always start with the simple exponent rule (d/dx (x^n) = n*x^(n-1)) and product and quotient rule are not much more difficult either.
But the chain rule is of such great importance while at first being weird to comprehend that this one should be trained until it sits like the solution formula for a polynomial of second degree.
I cannot stress how important it is to not skip it because of its difficulty, learn it and understand it, take some time just to train its use.
Also learn some of the advanced tricks like the e^ln trick to solve deriving things like n^x.

What does the "lim" mean? I'm assuming you are applying the r^2 sigma thing on that image and coupling it with the chain rule. What is that called?

limes

The result for the variable nearing the value given under the lim. For example you cannot calculate 1/x for x=0, but you can do lim(x->0) 1/x = inf

The whole limes calculus is very important in advanced math, especially when sums and series are regarded, there are special rules for working with limes..sss to find the value.

Also the thing the limes is used for is called limit calculation
