Does anyone know of any FILMS that are similar in tone to Haibane Renmei? I'm looking for something outside the realm of anime.
Something with a strong bittersweet / melancholic atmosphere, or dealing with similar pseudo-religious themes of sin and redemption and the afterlife, or just general existential despair, or suicide. Wrapped up in sort of a dreamlike or metaphorical presentation. If that's too specific, than just similar in atmosphere would great.

Wings of Desire (Der Himmel über Berlin)
Also, do you like older films?
If so, try Ikiru (1952) and The Seventh Seal (1957). Latter is not bittersweet though.

This sounds fantastic, thank you.

Yes, I'm open to any time period and all genres.
Ikuru is on my list, and I've only seen the Virgin Spring from Bergman but his films seem up my alley.
For another example, I just Kumiko the Treasure Hunter the other day and I thought it was fantastic. I love the way it turns from bleak realism with overtones of alienation and escapism towards pure fantasy in the end.
Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... And Spring is another film I love, much more on the contemplative end with strong Buddhist undertones.
i've been searching for a long time too, but i don't think anything could top haibane renmei
