Let's start with anime similar to Haikyuu:
>Slam Dunk
It's about basketball, but it's actually a lot more similar to Haikyuu than Kuroko in its grounded depiction of the sport and the fact that Haikyuu is heavily inspired by it, with many of its characters such as Tobio and Hinata being expies of Slam Dunk characters. The anime is from 94, but it's surprisingly visually decent for a long-running shonen. Its only real flaw is the fillers and the fact that it doesn't adapt the final story arc, but you can always continue with the manga.
>Diamond no Ace
It has a similar premise, with an unexperienced main character joining a team that used to be very strong but fell out of grace. The sport aspect is played very straight just like Haikyuu, and it has a decent anime adaptation, although it cut some corners on animation at times.
Anime similar to Kuroko:
>Prince of Tennis
Kuroko's ancestor. It's the first sports anime to have its characters use special techniques as if they were normal. It's enjoyable, but the anime doesn't look very good most of the time, unlike the OVA sequels that look very good.
>Eyeshield 21
Same as PoT, only a lot tamer. It's also one of my personal favorites, but the story takes a long time to pick up. There's an anime adaptation, but it's really bad because the animation is always god-awful except during important scenes, which makes it unwatchable to more experienced watchers, so you may want to read the manga instead.
I'll make another post.
Other shows:
>Hajime no Ippo
Best sports anime. Visually excellent, with amazing fights and training arcs. The main character's growth feels very real and has you hooked.
>Ashita no Joe
A classic about a young man picking up boxing to survive in post-war Japan after a life of delinquency. It's great as a sports anime, but also excels as a drama.
>Major
A coming-of-age story about baseball. It depicts the protagonist's growth with baseball in very touching ways while also having its share of very exciting moments, with the fifth season being a high point of the genre.
That's about all for now. I'll post more if the thread is still up later.
