to expand on this...
GIFs are limited to <= 256 colours, which are set in each image's "index". These images are therefore set in the mode of "indexed color". If you leave them in this mode, you can only use the colors already saved in the index.
to get around it, you change the mode to standard RGB color; you make whatever changes you want, and then change the mode back to indexed color (or just save as Compuserve GIF, which prompts the indexing process).
I've probably used some incorrect terms, but this is the basic logic of it. Now you know. :)
