How do I find out what an anime characters name is spelled in Japanese? Google translate dosen't work.

Usually I look up the name written in English and stumble on some wiki page that has both Japanese written and English names.

Go to MyAnimeList or AniDB or Wikipedia or the anime's wikia or Google it. All of those have the Kanji/Hiragana/Katakana for the character's name on their specific page.
There are many, many different ways to find this stuff. What show in particular are you looking for?

Some names in fictional shows can be absolutely outrageous puns by design which furthermore can be one of the either jokes or serious takes carrying the show. Just a name.
I speak and read formal Japanese quite enough to got a driving license for a large motorcycle and a car. I fully understand the bills and notifications as well, which is all about the studies. Pic related.
Most of the puns will still simply keep on passing me. I don't get it why the locals are laughing unless a native explains the joke from a cultural point of view.

Wikipedia typically has the character's name in Japanese. As does MAL, and most fan wikis for the show.

Yet you can't google the show or look on Wikipedia and read the names there?
Something doesn't add up.
