Is anyone familiar with Warhammer 40k? A few of my friends and I want to start playing, but we don't know where to start. Is there a somewhat cost effective way to obtain a small army + essentials, like rulebooks? Maybe starter sets with a focus on particular factions?

40k is not a cost effective hobby. That's the bottom line

- Find someone who's getting out of the hobby
- Buy their entire collection as one lot

That's pretty-much the only way to do it: everything is expensive, you need a huge amount of shit just to get started, and stepping into someone else's shoes is the only real way to avoid the cost.

part of me has always thrown around the idea of just making an army out of paper and downloading rulebooks
you could try that

Doesn't really work, as you need 3D models to work out cover and LoS.

Cardboard.
Cut the bottom and make a little stand equal to the size of a figure base.

40k has always used true line-of-sight, so you need to play with actual models. This is probably a scheme to sell more models, but if you're playing with cuboids and cylinders, you're playing some similar but different game.

Get Tabletop Simulator on Steam. There's a lot of fan support for playing WH40k on it.
