Im from Dominican Republic and I've never seen or heard of black widows found here, but this fucker sitting outside does look like a redback spider. Can anyone confirm? Its abdomen isn't as round and the hourglass is more like a vivid orange with a yellow line on the bottom
Black widow markings are not always red, they can be orange or yellowish. I can't really tell how big that spider is though, size is another key way to identify them. Black widows are not terribly big spiders, they're on average about 1.5 inches (3.8cm) long. If it's much bigger or smaller than that it might be a false widow of some kind. But the spider in that picture looks dead on to me.

i can just see the hourglass pattern on the abdomen. that's a black widow, all right. could be a male - they're much smaller than the females.
trap it in a jar and fill the jar with vinegar, just to be safe.

I don't have a ruler but this a Vespa scooter key. It has a tiny red dot on the back near the tip too.
