steins;gate (it starts dark, becomes lighthearted, then you realize the intro foreshadows the second half)
robotics;note(wew lad how shocking)
ergo proxy (relatively abstract and unstructured narrative, i liked it quite a bit)
shinsekai yori (i love this one, pacing is quite fast, starts lighthearted. gets morally twisted later on)
texhnolyze (wew what a surpressing animuh)
serial experiments lain (what?)
psycho pass season 1 (starts a bit slow, but you won't be able to stop after it picks up the main plot)
cowboy bebop (imo all round best anime created)
Gantz (pretty gud, manga continues)

Have you seen Lexx? Cult following, sci-fi, weird, funny, dark. Did I mention weird?
Have you seen Ergo Proxy and Psycho Pass?
Psycho Pass has a solid good idea but they completely ruined it for me with those totally unnecessary and flawed takes on modern philosophy. Citing Rousseau and Weber in so wrong places made me cringe. But if you don't care and just follow the story, it should work.
Ergo Proxy was good. Every character in the show is literally a subhuman. The story is solid in this take. The culture depicted in Ergo Proxy distinctively lacks the understanding of real human diversity even in the case of superior subhumans. The studio did it right here.
Blame! (on Netflix), however as a note, anything directly coming from Tsutomu Nihei is always more worth considering. He has created some of the most intricate sceneries to date to support any story setting. He is a genuine genius. Others borrowing him just tend to not do it quite right.

>texhnolyze
I am more and more convinced that everyone mentioning Texhnolyze is simply proud of their skill to spell/write that title correctly. It was Boring.
