Is it important/interesting/necessary to watch Dragon Ball before

Dragon Ball is superior, so yes. Z will be more enjoyable at first, but as the years pass, you will appreciate the original more.

I watched z first and watched db as like a prequel which was good enoigh for me to love it. but the animation was worse on the original db episodes..

Interesting? Yes.
Necessary? No.
Important? Eh.

It's far from necessary as Z ignores or out right shits on a lot of OG stuff, but it's undoubtedly better. So you would be missing out.

Not really, though you'll probably wonder who the hell a lot of the characters in Z are that never do anything and just hang out at Roshi's place. You might also wonder what the deal is with Roshi himself since I don't think he does anything at all in Z, despite being a bigshot in Dragon Ball.

I have to say that as far as nostalgia goes I love Dragon Ball more than Z. It's got more heart to it.
