Yesterday I unplugged my headphones from my desktop's front audio jack for literally less than a minute, plugged them back in, ubuntu didn't recognize them. Plugged headphones (Sony MDR-7506) into phone, they worked fine. Rebooted, it persisted. Rebooted into Windows, still persisted. Opened up pc to confirm that audio jack was plugged into motherboard (MSI B150m), saw no problems but when I booted into ubuntu after that it magically worked. Today it worked fine, but the problem suddenly came back out of nowhere. A minute ago it magically started working again (with two different sets of headphones). Rear audio jack working fine.

Anyone have any ideas what's causing this? I guess I could try updating the bios, though I doubt it would help since I'm only one version out of date. PC is less than a year old.

Just wanted to post a slight update. The sound is actually flickering in and out while the headphones are in use. Happening with both pairs.

Maybe you broke the port.

Took a close look with a flashlight and there are no outward signs of damage. Could static or something have done it? I have pretty heavy carpet in here and usually wear socks.

Blame PulseAudio.

Sound like the solder joint connecting the wire to the port is broken and any vibration is causing it to disconnect/reconnect

Unlikely, Windows seemed to have the same issue.

If that's true, is there anything I can do about it other than RMA/replace the case? I would hate to rebuild the whole thing.
