Give me ideas for a monster catching game.
I'd like to make something that isn't a blatant Pokemon ripoff.
I know of a monster catching game.
However, if I told you, then you'd be ripping off another game. It's pretty good too.

Dragon Quest V & VI were released before Pokemon, but whatever.
Anyhow, maybe try to add some mechanics like those of A Boy and His Blob (not a monster catching game), with different variations available for the different monsters.

catch humans and make them battle

You could tell him all of the ones you know, and all the best parts about them so he could try to mix and match

I really liked Lost Magic. It is a DS game mainly about casting spells by drawing certain shapes like pentagrams and shit. But there is a big element of trapping animals, then using them in your party.
Breeding mechanics that are deeper than pokemon's
How about a farm simulator with fictional animals?
Change up the types/matchups of them, make it really odd.
Some monster types from Foto Showdown come to mind (slime, beast, beastman)

Really anon? Just by saying "catching monster" you are getting inspired by pokemon, which in your opinion is a "ripoff".
Second thing is, how can you make a good game, if you don't even have an idea about the main mechanics?

That's what anon's asking about innit?

Make it you have to solve Math's questions to catch the monsters.
Also, decide whether you want any of the monsters to be human-like at all, or more/less intelligent than humans.
