My parents want me to build them a computer for around $400.

My parents want me to build them a computer for around $400. We already have some parts but we still need the motherboard, cpu, ram and probably a graphics card. My sister will need this computer for graphics design pretty soon so it needs to handle that well. What are your recommendations /g/? I dont know much about low-line parts.

Btw, I already have the case, power supply, harddrives, and I think i can reuse the windows 7 i bought from frys a while ago but idk.

Tell us the wattage of the PSU
Amd's RX 4xx is pretty cheap

If it came in a case on its own, then yes you can; if it came installed on a computer then no you can't.

What kind of "graphic design"? If it's just farting about on Photoshop, then any second-hand computer will be cheaper and better, or a $400 Z-box will perform just fine, and will make no discernible noise whilst taking up no visible space squatting on the monitor's wallmount.

If it's actual artwork, then a preowned Thinkpad x220t or x230t is a far better option. They both have perfectly acceptable processors for Photoshop and the onboard graphics is perfectly good for productivity apps. They have a 2.5" bay and an mSATA slot, and the x230 can do Intel Rapid Storage SSD caching. The killer, which you won't be able to replicate with your spare parts, is that they have pressure-sensitive Wacom tablets built into the screen. You literally draw straight onto Photoshop.

In short, ignore sunk costs. Just because you have a case and a PSU is no reason to build a worse solution just to get them used up.

So buy them one of these: http://cgi.ebay.com/302307745822

I guarantee you you won't be able to spend $150 on your pile of parts and make a better computer. Hell, you could get two of them.
