Hey guys, so 8 months ago I was involved in a house fire. My insurance guys took everything for cleaning and such and they took my computer. Now It was insured so they covered me and I got another one and they said they would destroy the old one but didnt, they took some files off of my hard drive and put them on a usb " hooray " but after they deleted and formatted the hard drive so it doesnt have an operating system anymore and for whatever reason when I got my stuff back they gave back my old laptop instead of destroying it like they said they were going to. Now that I have it back and it works fine I would like to put Windows whatever, 7 or 10 back on it, I still have my key but Do I really need to buy it from the windows site? cant I just download the operating system and put the key from my laptop on and use it?
i dont expect you guys to be my personal support team or whatever but I truly appreciate the help.

was windows or 10 installed on your laptop when you bought it ? do you still have the original hdd in it ?
if so there should be a partition on your hdd where you can restore your windows version.

it came with windows 7, but when I boot the computer HP boots up the black screen, f12 for details, HDD Not recognized, no boot. needs operating system, 3F0. No system recovery

is there a reason you are trying to load the original?
Why not just put on a cracked windows, or try out Linux now that you have a fallback PC in case Linux is too much effort
