I have a fan which connects with a 3 pin connector, my motherboard has a 4 pin connector. Would the fan work if I put the 3 pins into the 4 pins or would it not?

Fan: Came with the case but it has only 3 pins.

Yes it works, that's why the plastic stopper that makes sure you orient the connector correctly only backs 3 of the pins.

Correct. Just connect it to any chassis fan connector. You can control it via bios or onboard software.

Well, no, you can't control it at all, because that's what the fourth wire does.
1-2: 12v and ground
3: fan speed reporting
4: fan speed control

well, that's not fully correct.
4pin= PWM.
3 pin headers are control via voltage control.you can change in bios or via software.

Sure, but 4-pin ports (and most 3-pin ports) can't do that.
