What do these tools say when you try to wipe it? And what do you mean exactly by wiping it? Probably your SD card is fucked. But you could try creating a new empty partition table on it if you haven't tried that yet. It's possible the table itself is fucked, which would make it impossible to format with many tools. I recommend looking into gdisk and fixparts.

also whatever happened, it happened while it was in his phone, not when it was in his pc and being diddled there.

OP: if you remove a thumbdrive or a microSD from a pc without synching or "safely remove hardware", worst thing that can happen is the files being written to it don't get completed and the file allocation table gets messed up. even if that happened you should still be able to format the thing. microSDs have a huge range of reliability. some work for years, some work for weeks. you may have to face the idea that it's dead. it's an ex-SD, passed, on, bereft of life, it rests in peace, etc.
