I liked the song and I was curious about its meaning. It looks like it isn't military or related to marching in any way. Weird.

It is about the daily life of a group of people in Africa, but it probably is either colonially or militarily related. What else are early-mid 20th century Germans doing in Africa? Either they're settlers or colonial personnel of the empire, or they're from the Afrika Korps of the Wehrmacht.

It's probably not about noblemen traveling with their entourage, because they wouldn't sing songs.
It's not about traders or businessmen, because they wouldn't travel in groups.

The companionship aspect would fit to it being about soldiers from the Afrika corps, but that doesn't quite fit with going on a big game hunt. Soldiers don't go on hunts, so it probably is about colonial experiences.
