My friend got himself locked out of his phone. We've tried everything we could find online except factory resetting. It's a Galaxy On5.
I know it's a stretch anyone here will know a specific method to get in but any help is appreciated. It's a pattern lock.

Give it back, Chad.
If it was this easy to crack, there would be no point.

if all the important data (photos, contacts, etc) is stored on the sd card (and/or the sim card) then factory reset is the way

I would be surprised (but not very given the general shitness of Android) if it was storing that unencrypted.

afaik, stuff stored on sd cards is verbatim/unecrypted by default. wouldnt make much sense for normies to take out the sdcard, stick it in their laptop and not being able to see their data right away
its nothing surprising, ease of use first.
just like the encrypted data inside an iphone can be read just fine, if you know what you are doing *cough*fbi*cough*

- be unable to decrypt phone
- ask Apple
- be told to fuck off
- sue Apple
- be told to fuck off
- b-baka I didn't want to decrypt your phone anyway
Just return the phone you stole.

My only idea, assuming it's really your friend's phone (if you're lying, fuck you). Look at the screen from an angle and see if you can determine any smudges, to hint at what the unlock could be.

Did you steal this phone you fucking arse?
