Ok guys it's op from yesterday, this time we have this onion ring thing on a sweeping sample from a construction site. Anyone know what it is? Magnification 5,5k as stated on the pic.
I myself have no idea

post it on /x/ for guaranteed (You)s

Why on /x/ this is a science thing, and can't go on the science board because I'm asking people what this is. The pictrure is a 5500 magnification of something I have no clue about, and I'm asking if anyone knows what it is.

What? There are so many different kinds of micro-bacteria it's hard to pin point exactly what it is, unless it's a very common bacteria type.
Why do you want to know? I'm just curious...

Onion ring

It's a nano-onion ring, for tiny Indian people
How new are you?

Joke apart, could this sample come from oolitic limestone?
Or any sort of limestone I guess, I think all limestones are organic in origin in that they're made from the shells and skeletons of microalgae and other tiny marine animals, that sedimented into limestone.
So what you're looking at would be one such shell or skeleton.
They're not supposed to be that small though so I'm really not sure. Probably something else. You've got to ask a geology PhD/professor.

It's about 12-14 microns in diameter.
Do you have WDS/EDS attached to your SEM? You could do compound analysis, at least for heavier elements.
I'm suddenly thinking it metallic. A chip from machining those minerals around it (I assume the surroundings are mineral). Or maybe from sample preparation.

Can do analysis but I just pulled that pic from a folder of older pics so sadly it's too late now

Dang. Would have been nice to know. :)
Anyway, they use metallic tools to make construction materials, and sometimes tool chippings may look a bit strange shaped.
Obviously this is not any recommendation. Analysis should always be done without any prejudices.

I posted one yesterday to see if anyone would be interested, someone was and asked for more so I posted a new one today. I don't really need to know what it is but it's really fun to see peoples ideas about these things.

I wouldn't be sure about this either... I think metallic chippings this small would much more likely take a form more edgy and square like.
