I'm in pretty much the same boat as you, but Victory Gundam came really close to turning on the waterworks for me. A lot of suffering portrayed in the show could be seen as cheap shock value, but the direction and powerful music score really made the whole thing feel sincere to me; this was definitely made by someone who was depressed at the time.
