It's a non-sequitur.
"I [u]don’t[/u] think there is a reason to buy an item rather than renting it for a small fee. " does not follow from "when this problem is solved", so you can't splice it. That's style not grammar though.
Main problem is you're using the present tense, but "when X" requires the future tense, because "when X" means it's not the case now, but it will be in the future. You can't use the present tense because the condition isn't true in the present; you can use a future tense or a hypothetical tense, because your main verb has to be in a tense where the condition is or could be true.
You could use "wouldn't think there would be" (future tense main verb), or "as this problem is solved" (present tense condition).
