I have this old a1226 macbook lying around collecting dust.
It's a little slow. Is there anything I can do to make it faster? Boot another OS or should i toss it in the trash?

Why would you toss a working computer just because it's a bit slow? You can still use it as a casual laptop. Install a little resource hungry Linux distro with XFCE or even LXDE (both are window managers made for providing a full system with very little resource needs) or an older Windows version.

Just max the RAM and install an SSD.

OSX uses EFI, so you need to use GPT techniques to clone the drive. Just leave the system partition alone, with clear space after it, and you can grow it in OSX after you boot.

why would you toss it into the trash when you could at least sell it on ebay for cheap and at least get something out of it?

it doesn't have a battery as well. I honestly feel I should get a cheap new laptop or a thinkpad.
Seems like a fun project.
