Yes it's legit.
Antivirus companies need viruses to study so that their paid products can detect them, and dodgy websites to add to their safe-browsing list. The free versions get installed on loads of computers, giving them far more customers who might find a new virus or exploit site and press "upload a sample to AVG".
Plus the free versions try to sell you the paid version.
Best free antivirus is Avira, in conjunction with Avira popup blocker.
It's legit. All those things you greentexted are things that other programs available for free can do also without you having to pay, AVG is just trying to grab market share by doing it all only a shittier job. The only thing AVG would be useful for is viruses but they shove all that shit onto your PC and it's actually not a good thing.

It's "legit" in that it has lists of malware and can scan files and check against it's lists to see if it's known malware, BUT:
It uses system resources you don't need
It won't do anything against real time hacks or stupidity (the former you shouldn't need to worry about and the latter I hope you shouldn't)
It's bloatware and probable spyware, and I would consider it adware as it's going to be pushing the paid version on you anyway. If you want to be safe, don't be stupid. Install ublock origin for your browser and that will eliminate 90% of trouble you could run into. Next be a little smarter when browsing, don't just click on any link you see. If you're looking for porn/copyrighted content/other common virus distribution sites, be a little more cautious than normal. Don't run random executable files unless they come from a trusted source, and if you find it suspect, use malwarebytes instead. It's not a full featured security suite, it's just a simple scan and quarantine thing for if you DO fuck up.
tl;dr you don't need this shit
Just get MalwareBytes Anti-Malware (disable trial) and run that whenever you think something's fucked up with your computer.

It's Legit, but it's shit. I have a Mcafee one year trial installer if you want it.
