I used to fiddle around with a (musical) keyboard when I was in highschool but decided to study mathematics. Now I play the piano from time to time just for fun. I was wondering if someone here could share the books they studied from as a music major (at least for freshman year).
I'm not aiming to have the same level of knowledge of a composition major but I'd like to be able to write music with some other criteria than 'hey, that sounds nice'.
Pic somewhat related.
Do you have basic music theory? Like do you know how to read music?

Yes, I know how to read music (though I'm not so good at sight-reading). I'd say my music theory knowledge ends before the "Neapolitan chords" section at musictheory.net/lessons (chord progressions, traid inversions).

good, finish reading that site and you're fine unless you want information on more specific stuff

Would that site give me enough preparation to read about counterpoint? Which counterpoint book would you recommend me?

Yes it will, I don't remember the proper title but I learned counterpoint from "18th century counterpoint" or a title similar to that
