Hey lads. So I had to trash my laptop because it broke but there are some important files on the HDD (including my gigabytes of porn I wish to recover). So I hooked it up on my desktop but the windows cant find the hard drive. Looked in disk manager and disk part on the CMD but it isnt there either. I did however find it in setup and boot manager. What do?
Its a 2."5" 1TB seagate SSHD
>>
Oh I also checked if the SATA cables worked and swapped them arround with my main 3.5" drive so its not the cables
>>
>>238336
>I did however find it in setup
So copy them in setup.

Press shift-f10 and a CMD window appears.
>>
What do you mean windows can't find it? It doesn't show in My Computer? Is it visible in device manager tho?
>>
>>238339
Nope
>>238338
What
How
Also thats a shitton of gigabytes and my other drive probably doesnt even have enough space
Also I would like to use the drive as storage
>>
>>238349
Buy a new HDD and get it to service and ask them to just copy all your stuff from the damaged HDD into the new one.
>>
I think it has to do that bith the drive letters are C and only one can boot or something
>>
>>238362
Nope, BOOTMGR identifies partitions by device path, not by drive letter.

bcdedit confusingly and annoyingly "helps" you by translating device paths into drive letters, meaning that the output of bcdedit depends on how (and if!) the OS has mounted each partition, and is completely different from the OS when you run it from a recovery USB, but internally the BCD uses device paths.

>what

If that wasn't enough for you to go on, take your computer to a computer guy. You mentioned using the command line, so it was fair to assume you could use the command line. If you can't, you're just going to break something, and you only have one copy to break.
>>
Sorry I dont speak italian
Whats all that giberish?

The wierd thing is that if I swap out the drive im trying to get to work with another 360Gb drive I have laying arround it works just fine. The actual fuck?
>>
>>238368
Get some live version of linux (on pendrive, cd, doesn't matter) and check if you can mount your disk there, if yes - see how are your data. If that won't work you really should take your HDD to the service and have them copy your data to another HDD.
>>
>>238371
Alright will try
>>
>>238371
Its not detecting the CD
rip
>>
>>238388

Retard.
>>
>>238388

Download the linux iso
Use Rufus (Google it) to create a bootable usb drive
Remove your C:/ you don't need it for the linux and you don't want to kill it accidentally
Attach the dodgy HDD and the spare 360GB HDD
Boot PC with linux usb bootable drive
Check if your files are accessible
If the files are accessible I suggest copying them over onto the spare 360GB HDD
Profit
>>
>>238336
>it broke
how very descriptive

if it does not show in disk management or any other disk program, you have a damaged drive
>>
>>238336

Anyone else wondering if the OP's laptop "broke" because the drive failed?

There might be nothing wrong with the laptop that a new drive wouldn't fix.

to use laaptop hdd on regular sata controller need 2 connectors
>>
>>238492
This seems a lot of effort when you can just boot any Windows installer DVD or USB (or make one with the wizard), and press shift-f10 to get a command-line.

OP doesn't know what to do at this point, so I thought a step by step would be better.
>>
>>238548

Also, Window fails to recognise the drive, Linux might see it.
>>
>>238549

I think it's the
>Check if your files are accessible
>If the files are accessible I suggest copying them over onto the spare 360GB HDD
bits that you needed to do step-by-step.

If he can't work cmd.exe, why d'you think he'll be able to figure out Linux without help?

This is /wsr/ not /haxor/

Finding the file manager and navigating to HDD contents is hardly rocket science, even on a Linux OS. If you can do it on Windows you can do it on Linux. CMD.exe is a command prompt, Linux has a GUI, that's the difference. Besides, OP is free to ask for more detail on anything he isn't sure about, as long as we don't just call him a retard like >>238476.
