So, I'm in a bit of a pickle here guys.

I need to write up a letter of motivation and answer some questions on my university registration form.

Basically, I need to answer to

1) "What do you want to do?"

Shit, I dunno. I just wanna attend some classes and learn some shit.

2) "What will you do if things don't work out?"

I dunno senpai. Try again?

3) "Why do you want to study here and in this country?"

I don't fucking know m8

The thing is, I never had a clear vision of what I want to be.

I just wanna major in physics or some shit and become a researcher.

But how the hell do I stretch this one fucking line into a fucking essay.

4chin, pls help. What do I write?

P.S. No more memes pls. I actually need help.

This should be your clue that university is not for you yet.

Go take a year out, get a job, get some real-world experience, meet people, and work out what you want to do. If you can afford it, get a young-persons' work visa in a country you're interested in (if you can't think of one, pick Australia or an EU country (because you can work in any EU country on one EU country's visa)).

Once you've figured out what you do want to do, you'll know what degree you need to do it, and the form will write itself.

You only get one go at this. Don't waste it on something you don't care about.

If you want to major in physics, you can talk about the particular area that interests you. And your plans to continue into a researching area. You want to use university as step to achieve your goal. If you have a topic you like (ie fluid dynamics), check to see if someone in the University specialises in that area, which will suggest why your there,
it's fair to just state that If you can't get in, you will look to see what's available to you, but keep that university a priority.

You might be able to see topics for the classes online as well, so that's a reason to select a particular university.

I know what I want to do. I simply want to learn. Nothing else. I don't have any ambitions regarding jobs or starting a family etc.

Fact is, I only care about attending the classes and work as a researcher. But during admission, Unis want you to tell them what you want to do after graduation.

But I simply want to learn. And once I graduate I want to keep myself involved in research. Maybe as a lab assistant, or even become a researcher. Or maybe even become a teacher.

I know for sure that that's what I want. I just can't seem to stretch it out.

A Uni will never take me in if I say "I just want to learn" will they? They want people who wants to integrate into society and work.

I can write thousands of words about any subject but whenever it is about something related to me, I just can't get my brain going. I had that problem for a long time TbH

What an absolute cop-out.

You're never going to research anything, because research is self-directed, and you have no direction. If you don't know what you want to do now, how the hell are you going to contribute something entirely original to the corpus of human knowledge?

This task is specifically designed to weed out people like you who don't know what they want to do yet. There's nothing to be ashamed of, just spend some time figuring out what it is you actually want to do. University will still be there when you get back.

Learning the extents of a topic is a valid reason to go to university, you can talk about the limitations of reading, and you want to experience the next level

If you want to be a researcher, then you also want to contribute to the field, and create advancements. Being a researcher is a valid option for post graduation, and it's not a bad idea to state you are thinking about moving towards a doctorate as an ambition.

For most of this, you can move the discussion to the university to validate the points

"I am looking to be a researcher in the field of --- with a focus on ---, the university has a professor studying this topic, and teaches --- in class ---. My ambition is to become a domain expert and help in the advancements of the field, and I hope to use the degree as a path towards a doctorate application.

Just expand on the areas of interest in the field, companies in the field, etc

I don't think I was able to make you understand what was on my mind.

I know what I want to do.

I have a pretty clear idea about how to get there.

I just don't know how to convince others about it. That's it.

If it was just about my choices and stuff, that wouldn't be a problem. This is about putting myself on a paper and convincing someone that I should get a chance to sit in that class instead of thousands of other people.

I am concerned because I've never been good at presenting myself. People around me can easily read me without problem. But this is different. I have no time to show them what I am, I have to just go in and get their attention and I have to do it through writing, about myself.

That's actually hit pretty close to home.

I do have a doctorate in mind and I do know what type of research I want to do.

I guess I'll just go and write about how I want to move forward towards my doctorate from the current position I'm in.

I just thought I'd be able to write something better you know.

I know some people who'll write up a storm about how they want to change the world and shit.

And here I am. Trying to think how I can do whatever I am capable of.

I just am not sure why my mind goes blank when It's time to talk about myself.

Anyways, thanks for the advice guys.
