I have 8 12v 18Ah SLA batteries that I need to power to a 48v

You can charge them with a 12v charger, provided you put it across each pair of batteries in turn. You don't have to disconnect them from each other, so long as there are connection points for the charger.

To charge the whole array at once, you need a 48v charger.
