What are some animes where the characters feel like real people with self awareness instead of being tropes and cliches?

Aku no Hana
Tiger & Bunny. This one's tricky because most characters feel like tropes at first, but they all have serious feels and it's like if the writers created characters and let them live their own lives independent of each other and the story. Each character has their own insecurities, strengths, even their own different family situations and little things that ultimately make the show so great and unique.

Other than Ghibli and etc. a lot of the shows with realistic characters are fairly obscure. I'd recommend stuff like Akage no Anne, Fantastic Children, .hack//Sign (if you hate Shinji, don't even bother with this because you will hate Tsukasa too), and maybe Haibane Renmei, I don't remember if they were realistic or not, but they certainly weren't too tropey.
