My computer suddenly doesn't read my external hard drive anymore
When I plug it in it detects it as a local drive, and when I try to open it it gives me like a million error messages
I think it might have been the latest Windows update, but I'm not sure
There is almost a TB of stuff on there, I need to be able to access it again
Any advice?

Did you jiggle the connection on the drive? I have Toshiba drive similar to the photo and that flat usb 3.0 connector gets picky after awhile.

Tear out the drive and put it i new enclosure

does it work with another computer? like, say, the one at the local library? ask the librarians nicely.
if it works, then consider going back to a previous restore point in windows, if you can. if it doesn't, then, yeah, like >>181590 suggests, open the drive up, remove the HD inside the case and plug it into a SATA interface. a desktop PC will generally have at least one SATA cable spare. if you're using a laptop... then.. i feel sorry for you.

Note that modern externals don't have a SATA connector.
