i have an old 2011 macbook pro and its really slowed down. everything takes way too long to boot, opening programs freezes everything, browsers are so slow. shit like that.
will upgrading to a SSD make a big enough difference or should i just save the money and save for a new mbp

SSD makes a huge difference especially for an unoptimized OS like OS X
Besides the SSD there's not a ton of differences between the 2011 model and the current MBP either.

so you're saying its worth it
Have you tried a fresh install?

Yes.
I did that exact thing to a 2011 Mac, and it made it super-happy.
I maxed the RAM as well, but that didn't make nearly as much difference.
Be aware that OSX uses GPT, so you can't just ghost the drive. Use something like gparted to copy each partition individually.
OSX can resize the partition so-long as the GP Tables are well-formed, but they won't be if you just dd the drive, and it will corrupt the living shit out of it.
I did that to a 2011 Mac too.
