Getting pretty bored of paradox games (especially since I'm having a hard time getting into the HoI series), looking for some other strategy game that's fun to play. Preferably something that offers you some elements of city/empire building as well as roleplaying possibilities. I'm also looking for more than the bare minimum of AoE strategic depth (which as far as I'm concerned mostly revolves around finding the right building chain and pooping out as many units as you can). Also, no Total War (I already know of them and love them).

So, any suggestions?

You might like endless legends. It's closer to the Civilization games, although it's more about abusing what your faction is good at, and it's got a fair amount more depth than the Civ games.

Second this.

You can also consider Age of Wonders 3. Its like Heroes of Might and Magic but with better tactical depth.

If you want to try something more different, check out Sengoku Rance. Its porn with rape, but with strategic RPG elements that can actually get pretty hard.

I know how you feel. If you're like me you've tried mostly everything the grand strategy genre has to offer at this point.

I know it's not a recommendation for something current, but Mount & Blade: Bannerlord and The Guild 3 are both probably coming out this year as something to look forward to.

The M&B and Skyrim mod communities are still pretty active to this day. They gave me an extra 20-30 hours of gameplay in the last few months.

OP here. I hope the new M&B will be better than the old one. The old one is fun as hell... at the start. I feel that after you become a lord and your army can have about 100 men in it, the game gets boring. You're able to win most battles, you can win sieges when the enemy's town or castle isn't too heavily guarded/doesn't have too many high level archers, but other than that you can't really do anything. You're too weak to create your own kingdom, so you just run around fighting enemies. And you're really in Snoozetown if your king decides to make peace, then you're just trying to pass time until the next war. This is even true for Floris, the mod which supposedly fixes all M&B's flaws.

I really hope Bannerlor fixes this, because other than this major flaw M&B is an excellent game.

Agreed for the most part. I'm hoping for the same.

Floris mod annoyed me though. It fixed a lot of what was wrong but also what was right imo which annoyed me. I wish that mod had a settings options for what to enable or disable in it.

All mods in every game should have that option desu.

Because you never bothered to get into the political aspect of the game, which I find odd for somebody who plays Paradox Grand Strategy games. Creating a kingdom is possible in M&B, but it requires building long-lasting relationships with other nobles and turning their loyalty away from their kings to you. How you take large cities and heavily defended castles is you talk to your friends and have them follow you when you start up a siege, easily bolstering your numbers by a couple hundred men.

Managing your kingdom adds a whole new layer of complexity onto the game because you can't just conquer or do whatever you want, now you have to manage vassals who are constantly bickering with and scheming against one another.

Well then, at what point do you have enough nobles supporting your cause to not get steamrolled?

You actually don't need that many if your Right to Rule score is high enough. By the way, I'm speaking of Mount & Blade Warband, the expansion to the game cause nobody plays regular M&B anymore. The recommended setup is M&B Warband + the Diplomacy mod, which adds a lot of basic features to the game that should have been in there from the start (option to visit the guildmaster/village elder upon entering a city/village, so you don't have to walk around the streets every time, as well as a recruitment and treasury system are probably the most valuable pats).

Anyway, Right to Rule is something you raise by interacting with nobility in ways besides fighting. You can gain it by sending your companions on missions to spread word of your deeds (though this can lead to confrontation with your current ruler since it makes your ambitions very obvious) or by just being very diplomatic with lords and resolving disputes and the like. Max RtR is 99, so if your RtR is at least 50 most neutral parties will see you as a legitimate king if you declare yourself one, and if you're also on good terms with lots of nobles they might even join you if they're dissatisfied with their current king. Whoever you take land from will be your enemy though, so be prepared for a war with them. Having lots of friends inside the enemy kingdom is the best, because they could potentially join you and make that enemy much weaker while the rest of the factions just acknowledge you, resulting in a very brief war.
