So my granddad died of lung cancer a few years ago. I have been spending some time on and off tracking down a show I watched with him when I was a child. I have never been able to find it. The description follows:

It was a series about a older time traveler and a young boy. They have an enemy that follows them to several places through time and other worlds who is in a large mecha looking, red robot which is as a travel machine. The one episode I remember one episode had the two of them get trapped on a planet of giant aliens which locked them and other average sized creatures into a cage. They get out in the end, but soon discover the red mecha was trapped somewhere in that world too, but the person inside was not there currently. The end of the show reveals to the boy that the mecha was part of the "good guys" all along and that the old man is bad. The show could be from an earlier decade, not sure, don't remember well. Definitely not after the 2000s Can anyone help me out here? I've wasted a lot of time on this and exhausted my options
