Hi all-

I'm having an issue with my home-built PC. When I hit the power button, nothing happens...sometimes. If I unplug and leave it overnight, however, it boots up perfectly fine the next morning.

Things I've tried:

Replacing the PSU - nothing
Removing everything save the PSU and mobo - nothing
Replacing the power cord - nothing
Trying a different outlet - nothing
Resetting the CMOS - nothing
Booting from the power button on mobo - nothing

I'm starting to wonder if there's a ghost in the machine. Am I looking at another mobo here?

Your PSU is not providing enough +5VSB, or your SMC has crashed.

The former can br fixed by getting a better PSU or ameliorated by turning off wake-on-LAN, wake-on-USB, etc.

The latter might be fixed in a BIOS update.

Standby power, dude.

The power the PSU supplies when it's switched off so that the motherboard has enough power to be able to tell it to switch on.

It'll be listed as "+5VSB" on your PSU and in your motherboard manual.
