Nature Is Cool: Deer, Owls, and Hippies, oh my!

This is a blue board which means that it's for everybody (Safe For Work content only). If you see any adult content, please report it.

Welcome to the great out of doors!

The world is an amazing, nauseating, hypnotic and repulsive place, and it's time we explored a bit. Post nature at its best, its worst, its strangest or its funniest, just post it up.

Know something neat? Let's hear it. Have questions? let's hear them. Think of this as a free natural science class led by foul-mouthed assholes who likely need a shave.

We're looking for animals, weather, geology, all the fun stuff you could see on a nature documentary. Domestic or feral, academic or asshole with a gopro, let's see it all!

Pigs can make excellent pets, and also are a blight on the land.

Pigs, especially if reared as such from birth, can make very pleasant pets. They generally have the same activity level of a bulldog, and provided you get a miniature breed, don't require too much work to care for. They can even be trained to use a litterbox!

They will also go feral in a single generation, producing savage, local crop and animal destroying hordes in less then three years, and represent one of the faster rising threats facing vast areas of southern united states areas.

So for god's sake take care of them, if you do raise them.

Honeybees are fucking cool. Learned up on them last winter and just got a swarm 2 weeks ago.

Have some bee facts.

Queens release a pheromone that suppresses the other female drones from laying eggs. If the queen dies or leaves the hive, drones will eventually start laying eggs. Because they've never been fertilized, all their eggs will grow up to be drones. Without a new queen, the hive is doomed to eventually implode on itself because there will be no more replacement worker bees.

Oh nice! Gonna try and keep them? If you like, look up "Bee Gums", they have extensive work on them in the old Foxfire books. It's how the oldsters used to raise bees and honey, and even provides info as to what can go wrong, and how to fix it.

More bee facts:

Robbing the hive, done responsibly, does no real harm to the swarm. Because of the above-optimal conditions created by man-made hives and bloom fields, there is more then enough to share.

Different blooms make different flavors. The most common is clover, followed shortly by orange blossom, but almost any flowering plant can be harvested by a swarm, and flavor the honey. Myself, i like honey from near berry brambles.

You can, eventually, gain an immunity to bee venom. Old beekeepers are legendary for this, and it can even help with arthritis and other joint pain.

Also: never swat a bee if you can help it. They bloom a puff of pheromones when they die that will stick to whatever kills them. If another bee sniffs it, it's basically a giant sign that says "kill whatever this is stuck to".

Of course I'm keeping them! There's a lot of lost beekeeping lore. I'm doing the bee thing as a conservation rather than commercial endeavor. I've got the one Warre hive, parts for a second one, and two logs I'm hollowing out for some hands off natural hives.

>Also: never swat a bee if you can help it. They bloom a puff of pheromones when they die that will stick to whatever kills them. If another bee sniffs it, it's basically a giant sign that says "kill whatever this is stuck to".

Squishing bees is inevitable when handling bees, and so is getting stung. Getting stung also paints you with a pheromone target saying "kill whatever this is", but you can puff smoke over the area, or if you don't have a smoker ready, you can smear some honey on it.

Most beekeepers don't bother with that though, they just roll with the bee-punches.

SPEAKING OF BEE PUNCHES: bees resort to stinging as a last resort right? Before they start stinging, aggravated bees will deliberately fly into you to try and freak you out and scare you away.

That makes me so goddamn happy to hear. It's always good to harken back a bit. Learn some of the things that helped the old timers build this place, and help take care of oneself too. Have designs to build a minor fish farm in a few years, and fast on the way to having a respectable raspberry bramble. It's less a hobby and more practical, i have four kids and an assload of extended family...

I had no clue you could de-pheromone yourself with honey or smoke. Would, say, a cigarette provide enough, or would you need a real bee smoker?

I've observed the bee-ramming thing before, i had no clue it was on purpose to be honest. That's both amazing and slightly adorable.

another bug fact for folks: Dragonflies are about as scary as real dragons to other bugs. A high-def recording of one or several dragonflies in flight can and has been used as a very effective bug repellent.

Okay, I heard a professor of mine say this but I wasn't paying attention so I couldn't remember the name of the animal.

Allegedly there's an animal that, when stressed, will produce so much hormones/will get so freaked out, that it gives itself a heart attack or renal failure and it dies. Anyone heard of this?

I know possums will give themselves seizures as a defense behavior, the idea being nothing wants to eat something hissing, foaming, and voiding from every hole.

Animal that can get stressed to death...I'm putting my money on a rodent of some kind, but i couldn't guess which.

>Allegedly there's an animal that, when stressed, will produce so much hormones/will get so freaked out, that it gives itself a heart attack or renal failure and it dies
that just sounds like small rodents in general. They are prey animals to the point that their bodies aren't built for surviving a predator attack even if they manage to escape.

imagine that bitch going jogging alone in the woods when she sees the bear and thanks to fucking Bambi she thinks bear doesn't give a shit so she stops and locks eyes with it then when it starts to approach she runs, the bear charges after her. Imagine the fear pounding in her heart as the bear catches up to her and tears away at her tight sweaty tanktop with its claws, gouging away strips of her soft tender flesh, gouging her shoulder blades and spine, imagine her falling to the ground and trying to crawl away but the bear stops and pins her down with its powerful paws, jaws clamping down on her, her ribs creaking and snapping, blood coursing out of her mouth from her pulverized organs, her shrieks of pain turning to helpless mewls of agony as she lays there, thrashing in futility as the bear rips at her, biting down on her neck, digging out her breasts like cottage cheese, blood flowing, flowing over her clothes, saturating them, darkening them, seeping over the pine needles in a thick syrup, imagine her thinking of her family as the creature bites down on her neck, paralyzing her, leaving her completely helpless as it begins to eat her, slowly, consuming her beautiful body one chunk of flesh at a time, with her only able to stare helplessly as her life slowly leaks away. By the time the bear has bitten into her tender thigh flesh, she has finally died, and once the bear has eaten its fill it will digest her and shit out her remains throughout the wilderness. Bacteria, birds, and maggots will feast on her corpse as well, processing her into dirt and shit, spreading her around until she is part of nature again.

As for the bee ramming thing, it's sometimes the only means of defense some species of bees might have. In Brazil, there is one commonly known as Arapua. It's a tiny stingless bee, and their strategy to get you to leave them alone is to fly into you and get stuck in your hair. They buzz really loud to try and scare you off, but everyone knows they're not actually dangerous.

They also try to stuff themselves in your nose and ears to annoy you away. It's actually pretty funny to watch them go after someone.

Their hives are usually inside structures like trees or even human buildings with cracks in them. They make a tube out, and that's what's in the gif.

Yep.

This is what happens, and what needs to be done, once a hog population gets out of control.

They eat everything they can find, tear the dirt to shit, dig up and eat tree roots, eat or kill anything bigger then a mouse in their home range, and generally act like a plague. There's a reason old greek myth features giant, dangerous boar on more then on occasion.

I'm not sure. A cig would probably work though.

Yeah I've had both deliberate bee ramming and accidental too. When I stand in front of the hive to observe I will constantly be getting bumped into from the back and the front from bees trying to get to the flower bed thats close to them. You can tell when one is pissed off though - their buzzing is much higher pitched. Those are the ones bumping you on purpose.

Sadly, this one is most certainly faked. The camera isn't completely overexposed from the lightning's return stroke, the lightning isn't reflected in the water, lightning doesn't cause water to be thrown into the air, and if this happened they would both likely be dead.

Crows, as well as many other birds, are incredibly smart. Their brains more closely resemble that of mammals than any other class of animal.
1
A demonstration of this intelligence can be found in a psychology experiment commonly known as the "marshmallow test," wherein an organism is given the option to either have a small reward immediately or a larger reward later. Crows can even learn to trust some people and factor this into their decision in said experiment.
2
This appears to be from a metatool study. In short, metatool is the use of one tool to create another thar more appropriately fits the needs of the individual (i.e. using a rock to sharpen a stick into a spear, using a rock to shatter flint into arrowheads, etc.)

Pigs are horrible pets.
They can weigh up to 150 pounds, they could destroy furniture easily, they eat practically anything, etc. They're dirty animals and aren't meant to be used the way you want them to.
In that webm, the pigs weight will multiply in no time.

I saw an alley cat at work, limping around with one of his back feet snapped clean, so his foot flopped around all wacky as he limped along. I assumed he was gonna die soon, but a week later I saw the same fucking cat with his wacky foot limp over to some shade, limp in a circle, and settle down with a yawn, like nothing was wrong.
