My wood shop class in high school had one even bigger. It was like 15 feet long, and had this huge hood thing that hung way over it. I didn't know it was a big deal

This thread gave me memories of wood shop class and auto tech (I've been a mechanic for 10 years), I went to my high school's website just out of curiosity and wood shop is no longer offered.

Kind of understandable since that's not a craft there's much demand for these days, but I still feel like a lot of the skills translate. At least auto tech is still there, and now they offer robotics

>>
>>1773663

>>
>>1773969
"Diesel engine runaway is a rare condition affecting diesel engines, in which the engine draws extra fuel from an unintended source and overspeeds at higher and higher RPM until destroyed by mechanical failure or bearing seizure through lack of lubrication." Just look up diesel engine runaway on Wikipedia.
>>
>>1773976
but even with extra fuel, wouldn't the engine be somewhat limited by the available oxygen from a closed throttle?
>>
>>1773980
"Diesel engine's speed is controlled by varying the amount of fuel supplied to the cylinders in the Unit injector and since no air restriction is present (and is moreover accelerated by the crankshaft driven turbocharger or compressor mechanism) an unlimited supply of air is thus possible."

>>
>>1773980
>>1773969
Runaway diesels usually feed on oil, especially when a turbo starts to fail. Oil journals dump oil at the turbo, directly into the engine, which feeds the combustion without control. the added engine speed spools the turbo faster, as well as pulling more air through the turbo and intake, causing more oil to be released and subsequently consumed. It can usually be stopped (if reacted to in time before it loses all of the engine oil) by smothering the intake with a rag, or similar barrier, or using a fire extinguisher in the same way.
>>
>>1774329
When your diesel engine uses a steam powered starter, you know shits powerful.
>>
>>1779320
Thought it was a steam engine. The small engine was to get over top dead center

Could someone make a webm out of this wicked sounding smoke exhaust fan?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k_OmnpSDhwQ&hd=1

Also if anyone is interested the comments section brings some insight as to why the other fans also spin and why there's so much dust flying around.
>>
>>1756044

It's a synchronous motor, the first comment on the original video explains what's going on: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fNuI6keQXYA&hd=1

"Here's a layman's explanation of what is going on:
This motor is designed to run at constant RPM (Hence it is a synchronous motor) but when it is off it takes a lot of energy to get it spinning because its magnets aren't in sync yet. To make it easier to start, the housing of the motor is left free spinning at first and electricity is put in, which makes the housing spin up to full speed. When that happens, the guy with the big wheel starts putting a brake on the housing, which brings the motor out of full speed, and the rotor inside starts to spin to compensate. By slowly putting the brake on, the motor can be made to start up whatever the load is, until finally the motor housing stops spinning altogether and the rotor is driving the load at speed.
its a really brilliant way of making a motor work for a relatively constant load without requiring more horsepower for the startup condition."

So It seems like they used this setup to sorta act like a clutch.

It looks to be a multiple expansion steam engine. The small engine is what's known as a barring engine and is used to start the main engine, usually by pushing it over TDC. The barring engine itself is a two cylinder single expansion style, likely with a 90° offset between the cranks so as to not have a TDC point.

I was helping my dad with fixing the Case 10-30 when I was a kid and had that happen. We took it down the road to test it when it went fucking crazy, I have never heard on scream like that. Dad popped it in neutral and I jumped off when it slowed down a little. He did something, from the sounds of it stuffed the air intake, and it calmed down and sputtered to a stop. It was completely unexpected, when you have spent years on a machine and know what it sounds like at max, to hear it pass that threshold sends all kind of alarm bells going off in your head.
