It came out around the start of the US anime boom, it referenced a lot of things from around the same era and was one of the first popular anime to do so, it was kyoani. It's basically popular because of when it came out.

I cant understand why /a/ hates 3-gatsu no Lion just because its made from Shaft. Sure I understand some of Shitbo's direction was utter pretentious Tarantino neck splitting shit but apart from that it was a decent chapter-by-chapter adaptation. The weekly threads were nothing but hurr durr kyoani is better and it will flop shitposting that I stopped lurking on those threads. I actually prefer the anime over the manga because I just cant deal with Umino's grandiose/ tldr writing (read the manga years before the anime aired because im not a filthy secondary)

Wasn't as good as it could be, but not terrible either.

Deals with some nice ideas (politics between worlds, language barrier, public opinions on military action) but keeps them all very shallow which may/may not be a good thing.
Maybe >>1762551 wanted a more serious show devoted to Russia and the US trying to muscle into the Gate world, the Press demonising the JSDF or Religious repercussions of a living breathing demigod coming to our world. Not me though, maybe the LN dealt more with that side.

It does have a number of flaws though, mostly from trying to broaden appeal with otaku MC, x00 year old loli goddess, MC surrounded by cute girls and stupid actions from the cast that will have you shaking your head:
