half life 2
it's mega overrated and aged like milk
it had incredible physics simulations for its day and Alyx is a fun companion, but the plot is about as rich as a bum under an overpass. Honestly the first Half Life (though even more dated graphically) at least has a plot and the combat is more or less the same between both.
if you enjoy the fast-paced kind of combat you get out of Counterstrike, it's worth a look - it certainly has memorable moments, from creeping through zombie-infested Ravenholme to dune buggying across the bug-infested beaches at max speed
>>1523423
If you're going to get all detailed you could at least tell him its Episode 2
>>1523425
it's really not worth playing just any individual episode of half life 2, you may as well go for the whole thing
>>1523423
>Comparing Half Life and Counter Strike's gameplay
>Aged like milk
>When I still haven't played an FPS thats used physics in combat as well as HL2 did
>When the facial animations are still some of the best in vidya
>Implying HL1 had more plot when HL2 actually presents plot to you way more than 1 did
>Saying the combat is the same when HL1 is alot faster
I even prefer Half Life 1 but this is just misinformation. Aged like milk is opinionated because outside of what I said I do agree in other aspects its visibly dated. Even FPS of its time did gunplay alot better, with the shotgun and crossbow being the exceptions of shit gunplay.
>>1523423
I played it for the first time recently and I thought it actually balanced gameplay and plot pretty well, the plot also had me decently invested but I wouldn't say its stellar.
Theres some spots that reek of being tech-demo like but the physics were imo pretty well integrated into regular combat, there was never a situation after getting the Gravity Gun where I couldn't find a way to use it.
And as someone who put way too much time into CS:GO I wouldn't really say they're similar. CS is slower in flow and everyone dies alot faster, they're also of course completely different in one being single-player and the other multi-player. If you meant in how it controls I kind of agree on that aspect as all Source Engine FPS handle similarly.
>>1523432
HL1 has a simple but clear plot - you were involved in an experiment gone wrong, the facility is getting raided in an attempt to contain things, everything is fucked.
HL2 out of nowhere deigns you a messianic figure -- The Free Man -- and out of the gate everyone just knows who you are and it's almost a parody of protagonists. Vague statements about submission to authority and rebellion are thrown around as time stalls to buy more time for episodes so Valve could come up with more plot later on.
And while I will say the face rigging is good (definitely not the best in vidya though), the tradeoff is very stilted body animation. Everyone looks like they're in a constant state of receiving an electric shock with how awkwardly they move and stand.
I think you're definitely overselling physics in combat though. The whole thing was basically a tech demo/excuse to show off a physics engine so of course throwing objects does damage, but aside from the gravity gun nothing really stands out to me in terms of physics combat. Maybe you can remind me? There were clearly moments where physics was used for puzzles like with the boat ramp for example (geez there must have been at least twenty 'create a counterweight for this pulley/lever system' puzzles), but I can't think of anything beyond "throw object at enemy to kill it" that stands out for physics combat.
>>1523423
>>1523436
Also Alyx is probably one of my favorite NPC companions, she fit and exceeded all the key points on being a good one and had a very likable personality.
>>1523440
To my understanding the Resistance members that survived Black Mesa spread the word afterward that you were who stopped the Xen invasion.
>>1523440
While I thought everyone knowing who you were was pretty protagonist syndrome I thought it flowed well with Gordon being one of the only people that actually got shit done during the Resonance Cascade and was the man who saved the planet from getting assfucked by 1 alien empire. I figured his co-workers he clearly knew closely probably held on to the possibility he was alive since his fate to everyone else was ambiguous after Nihilanth was defeated.
>>1523440
I'm probably overselling it a little. My love for the physics in combat in HL2 and episodes was how much shit it gave you to use alongside the damage formula for what kind of object you were using. Nearly everything except the walls could be either picked up or at least punted.
I'm also probably mildly autistic for valuing the difference between pressing a button to throw a grenade back in COD and actually pulling out the Grav Gun, aiming, and either punting or picking it up and throwing it back.
>>1523440
Alot of storytelling as to whats going on in the grand scheme of things outside of the main plot about you is typically environmental. It could've used a little more outright storytelling but I did appreciate the subtlety.
Ok you had your discussion, post more webms

I love people who think 6 is actually shit. The combat system (which sadly doesn't actually shine in anything but mercs) is amazing and even though I'm aware that's not exactly what RE is known for, at least before 4 that is.
Also the game tells its incredibly stupid story with an amazing honesty, just like 5. I know people are into "ironic" shit nowadays but I still like that.
Granted, the game has a big amount of flaws, mainly the level design and the villain, but anyway, saying 6 is just outright bad is incredibly simple-minded.

People who judge the music off gameplay videos aren't getting the full effect. It does sound kind of generic, nothing really new being done as far as music goes; however the music is great when you're actually playing it, it ramps up when the action starts, the dynamic cues really work well and for that I loved the music in Doom.

The series as a whole is pretty good, and the game in the webm is probably one of the best in the series.
You can think of it like a mashup of:
Metal Gear Solid (in terms of bosses, weapons,&stealth elements)
Terminator (malevolent AI seeking world domination)
The Matrix
All You Need is Kill/Groundhog Day (overreaching plot line that the MC is somehow stuck in a time loop, and certain circumstances force a reset) .
FEZ (2.5D mechanic)
Currently there are nine games in the series ( two of them being demos). The games started out as purely 2D platformers and then gradually evolved into the game you see now.
Here are some gameplay vids from various games in the series from earliest to latest:

>>1523440
As a person who knows fuck-all about how to tell a story, you sure are blowing a lot of steam out your ass as if you do.
"out of nowhere" is by design. You are thrown into the middle of a world you haven't been in for years because of the events of HL1. That's called in medias res, and it's a storytelling technique you overbloated fuck.
The 'vague statements' are enough for anyone to understand what is going on. There is a facist regime, people are trying to overthrow it. It's called subtle plotting. Instead of having a fucking floating fairy tell us what is happening in the story every 5 seconds, you get characters talking and acting like real characters. You know why? Because no one wants to listen to exposition poorly spouted out like it is in 90% of games.
'a stall for more episodes' - don't be a twat. That's never been how valve has made games and you are just trying to be an asshole. You're succeeding too.
The animations were amazing for their time. How the characters eyes follow movement or the slight ways they shift attention was studied for years to get just right. No other game has ever done that.
'excuse to show off physics' isn't the same thing as THEY FUCKING INVENTED THE PHYSICS ENGINES ALL GAMES USED THEREAFTER. I still can't believe what a massively stupid twat you are. It's honestly amazing. A physics engine is as much 'does a tv react properly to an explosion?' as it is 'what happens when I drop a weight?' It literally affected the entire world and you're bitching because you 'only' had an entire zone (ravenholm) dedicated to it, a fucking gravity gun, an overcharged gravity gun, and the ENTIRE LAST LEVEL. Yeah, fuck those lazy dicks.
If you don't like the game, say so, but your pisspoor attempt at picking apart the game shows you for the fucking mongoloid you are because mostly you just have asinine attacks because you can't articulate coherent arguments.

Right when he launched the explosive thing another enemy came in through the vent on the left and caught the explosive killing both of them. I never played the game on hardcore but I can only imagine the ass pain that would have caused.
>>1548117
Ah, that's what I figured. What's different in hardcore mode?
>>1548125
>The Hard Core experience is notably different from any other difficulty setting as checkpoints are disabled and the player is entitled to only three game saves for the entire game in Dead Space 2...
Difficulty-wise, Necromorphs encountered on Hard Core are around Survivalist mode in terms of durability and damage output, while item drops are the same size as Zealot mode. To beat Hard Core mode, a player must be conservative, enduring, patient, and skilled.
New Game + saves do not transfer over, forcing the player to start from scratch.

I really liked Doom 4 but man hell's art style was so lame. It was like power rangers or some shit. Original Doom had a genuinely dark art style.
