The story is good, but a solid 70-80% of the game is side content you don't need to do. I'm a completionist, so I forced myself to do everything, but it wasn't fun because the combat is super repetitive.

It's a lot like the Batman games. You can basically button mash through fights, but because it has an endless wave mechanic, it just never stops. I can't really recommend it.

Get Shadow of Chernobyl and download AMK, it's a good way for an introduction to the series. Don't listen to that dude who suggested STALKER Complete, it makes the game super easy and turns it into a rather stereotypical shooter.

Clear Sky is optional, it's an okay game.

Then Call of Pripyat, Only mods I ever played with it were MISERY and Call of Chernobyl. Currently Call of Chernobyl is pretty hot right now because it's the ultimate roaming STALKER experience, it takes the levels and factions of all 3 games and merges them into one standalone game. You pick a faction and stalk and follow part of the story line for Shadow of Chernobyl.

Visit the STALKER general on /vg/ for guides and links for mods and what not, basically everything you want to know about the game is listed on the threads.

Only problem with the game is that the end-game is pretty boring because you're basically over-powered, making the last few story missions and boss fights trivial.

In fact, the bulk of the challenge in the game will definitely come from high ranking captains with a lot of immunities, but it's really cool how the game forces you to gather intel and formulate a proper strategy for a fight.
If you liked the Batman Arkham games, you'll love this, the combat is the same, only better because instead of just breaking a bone or knocking someone out, you're slicing an Uruk's head off, or some other manner of brutalizing them. It's really gratifying.

Story is okay, I guess. I don't know. I'm not a LOTR fan, so I don't know how much it would interest and please a LOTR fan. I understood what was happening and why, and i liked the characters. That's about all I can ask for.

They don't use the bolt release I assume, because its balanced for a slower reload, and it would look stupid if they just really slowly inserted the magazine, and then slowly pushed the bolt release.

The swivel is different now ingame, I think that vid must have been from the beta? It looks less silly now, actually usable.

The 'ledge' is a guide for the shoulder stock. If you pause at 0.01 you can see the bolt release.

Optics aren't rendered realistically, I assume for performance reasons. Gameplay wise the FOV is already so reduced that acogs are difficult to use, so making it work like a normal optic would make them almost unusable over unmagnified optics. Maps aren't large enough for it.

The game is pretty fun but also full of cancer, and is super grindy. If you have a bunch of friends willing to drop the insane price for the grindfest then its pretty fun.

The reason is purely practical; while a shotgun can definitely down a man, there just isn't any point to carrying one for that purpose when the standard issue service rifle will do the job just as well. Therefore you only issue one shotgun per squad (if even that), because anything more would be extra weight that could otherwise be used to carry more ammunition, grenades, hydration and such. And the shotguns that do get issued don't get used in anti-personnel simply because they're kept loaded with breaching loads, and those don't do the job as well as the standard issue rifle would.

There're more things that contribute to shotguns not being used, for example they have next to no penetration, and in any conflict which doesn't involve shooting unarmoured goat fuckers the opposition would definitely be wearing body armour. To overcome armour, you need something relatively small and hard that's moving fast, while shotgun loads generally consist of multiple smaller, soft pellets moving at relatively low speeds. Sure you could have your shotguns loaded with hard metal slugs, but again, what would be the point? You already carry a rifle.

If you feel like this makes shotguns somehow inferior to rifles, you shouldn't. The shotgun shines in its versatility, you can hunt pretty much anything with a single 12/76 shotgun, given that you have a variety of different loads and slugs available. It's just that their versatility is wasted in wars.

No, really. Since most military grade explosives are what we call "stable", like C4, shooting them won't make them explode. A lot of bombs that are rigged to explode with a timer or remote detonator simply aren't designed to blow up if their control mechanism is shot, unlike in the movies.

Shotguns are ideal for this kind of thing because they can simultaneously rip up a large segment of the internals of an object in one blast.
