Shit quality gifs were turned into a different flavour of shit by converting them onto webm and having placebo effect fly around, and people were and still are stupid about converting to webm.
Hell, back then you had to carefully control the gif size, take only what was best; now you just rip off the video, leave the uninteresting bits and let the converter do the job, doing bad quality stuff has become easier now
Segregation against the very core of the gifs boards started to form as gif was pushed away and all the OC that had accumulated over the years was being dismissed.

Hopefully, one day the gap will be filled as the old, raw sources that were once converted to gif or flash are now converted to webm, albeit slowly, and as new content is generated and converted; but that's still a few years ahead. But hey, as long as nothing else happens to segregate content, will get there, right?
