This quality could be much much better with an higher mb limit.

I'm gonna play the devils advocate. In my mind, 10MB would mean every 100 posts with a 10 MB webm attached would require a gig of storage. It also mean that any archives would have to upgrade their space requirments.

It could also result with people uploading movies(which would be cool at first) would likely result in even more DMCA take down requests, which would evolve into having more mods to ban people from uploading Copyrighted content which would result in a higher percentage of possible power abusers.

To help deal with that it could result in webm dumping restrictions for individual ip addresses over a certain amount of data usage and have to wait a period of time to be able to post more content.

It could also gain more attention, any where from feds to normies which can result in a higher increase of shit posting/DMCA inspectors.


This is all mearly speculation. However, if I owned the hardware, this is the train of thought I would use when considering the size limits for webms.

Plus I think having smaller limits makes for having better content as we don't get slammed with Tim Buckley lengths of "humor"

I think this right here would be the biggest issue, with the 4 MB limit we are forced to keep our webms short, but with 10-15MB limit you could probably upload entire T.V. episodes at low quality, which would cause a DMCA shitstorm

There is no point to raising the limit, at least not on /wsg/.

be sure to set Variable Bitrate, Click "Enable High Quality". CRF 35 / Tolerance Max, Audio 2-3, coupled with denoise on the Advanced panel, should get you ~30s clips resized @540-720p at reasonable quality within the 4MB limit, provided there aren't major scene changes.

I would agree to upping the filesize limit to 8 or 10 mb if the length limit (5 minutes, 300 seconds) was kept the same, which is what everyone forgets.

If we increase the length webms can be then the board will become more about video sharing than small clips, which sorta fucks with what the board has been historically.

Also, fuck the idea of letting other boards have sound webms. Quite a few boards already have threads just of webms despite the limits, letting them have sound would basically take half of /wsg/'s traffic and lower the quality of posting in other boards.

While we're on the topic, what's the best way to get a 4+mb mp3 down to reasonable size without sacrificing too much quality? I've been getting into making webms for YGYL threads, but I get frustrated when I have to cut the tracks off at like 30 seconds.

I think it would be better to have the video resolution be a wide rectangle rather than a square. Some browsers remove the scroll bar if the video is too narrow. Something like 96x384 would be smarter.

I think upping filesize to 5 or 6 mb isn't a terrible idea. 4mb isn't enough to take advantage of the current 5 minute length limit, and as long as they don't increase that you won't get any change in how the board and webm embed system is used.

we have to hear from the admins though, as there might be other constraints such as server limitations we can't know about.

Was going to post this. Apparently there are still some serious playback issues with vp9 for some users so that might be why, not sure.

The point of webm was to replace gif in file size but increased in quality.

Not to expand in size over gif. 3MB/4MB limit is fine for 30 sec to 1-2 min video.

10MB to 15MB is ridiculous in my opinion. For the stuff I create and upload, 4MB is fine most of the time.

The only time I run into issues is when I attempt to upload something that isn't a 'gif style' video. By "gif style" I mean something short in length, like a reaction webm.

Longer vids with sound end up looking less than stellar. But I assume that is because the powers that be don't want us uploading 5 minute long 720p videos. They want up to use webms as replacements for gifs.

But who knows? Maybe they will change their minds. Years ago I could not have imagined moot adding archives to the site.

why would you ever make stamp-sized webms? if you're encoding a static image the frame dimensions are virtually meaningless in terms of file size.
webm related. 960x600 gradient, 4 minutes - still 1.3 MB left to up the quality or length. and that's without any dirty tricks and with deliberately placed keyframes every 10 seconds to facilitate easier seeking. there's still a lot of leeway left to get the file size down. when you encode static images with sound, the biggest constraint is the 300 second length limit. if you feel constrained by the 4 MB file size limit, you're doing something wrong.

I have some bash scripts for making webms, both with and without audio, maybe they'll come in handy to those using *nix systems.
Don't think it'll work on Windows unless you have some setup to run BASH & UNIX commands on it.
