It was, and then wasn't. The first world war had a much more hellish feel on the battlefield, while WWII was a generally more brutal war throughout entire nations. Civilian centers got smashed way worse.
Depends on whose point of view it is. The British walking across the fields at the Somme or the Jews being rounded up in Poland during the early 40s.
