I did that 'falling to the knees' thing in real life, as a part of a skit we were practicing in my anime club and messed up the cartilage my knees somehow. I don't watch all the moeshit every season, but moe shows don't take themselves seriously nor have much of a plot, so they don't feel as repetitious. A lot of them are shorts as well, so they're just cheaper to produce.

So can anyone tell me why Madoka Magica is good? I have a dissenting opinion, and I can think of a few reasons why people might like it, but they seem too shallow for me to believe.

So what is your opinion on it? I like it because it's a deconstruction of the magical girl genre. It's not especially deep or anything, but I like the art style and the story's better than most magical girl stuff.

Firstly, the art is pretty amazing. I love the labyrinth designs and the character's styles. This is Shaft, and it shows. The action scenes are well animated as well. On a technical level, this show seems pretty bonkers.

That's about all I have to say that's positive, though. The narrative was okay, like, the over arching concepts were fine, but I feel like it was executed poorly.

They were clearly playing on the bait and switch, but it's obvious from the get-go that all is not as it appears, at least to the viewers and to Madoka. The twist was too obvious.

To that end, no body even remotely questions Kyubey. You could argue that it's because Mami makes everything look so nice, but Humora should definitely ring some alarms. I feel like reasonable characters would of questioned Kyubey way earlier, and it made them feel way too unrelatable to me. Never mind that it's a magical cat that grants wishes, and they don't question that either.

After episode 6 things got better, though Kyubey seemed very inconsistent. He acted outside his own self interest at times, revealing information that was detrimental (the whole scheme), but other times was intentionally deceptive (telling Kyouko that they could maybe save Sayaka).

Those are my 'objective' complaints.

Io me, the anime sells entirely on graphics, music and theming. The actual plot is mediocre but the character arcs are decent. The writing is defenitely not the strongest part

I can forgive people not questioning Kyubey right away because they're just kids.

I feel like the anime didn't play up Homura's coldness quite well enough. Maybe they were relying on association with her voice actress?

In the manga version she was a lot meaner, which would make everyone less wanting to trust her. Like, when she warned Sayaka about getting herself some Grief Seeds and Sayaka says she doesn't care if she dies, Homura says "Well then why don't I just kill you right now?"

When Kyubey told Madoka evrything about the scheme, I think he was genuinely trying to appeal to her, but doesn't understand how because of the difference in their thinking.

He was also still lying to her, saying that they need to keep the universe safe for when humans advance far enough to join them, when he just abandons the Earth to die in the other timeline.

Yeah, thinking back, Kyubey is more consistent than I give him credit for. I still can't get on board with them not questioninghim, thoughy. They're in high school, they're old enough to have that level of sense. It's more than just that, though. When Mami dies, they don't even discuss resurrecting her with a wish? Not that it's necessarily possible, but they don't even talk about it. Kyouko shows up and is a huge bitch. Madoka doesn't even say 'Hey, Kyubey, can I wish that magic girls weren't bitches?' She has these strong desires but never even asks if she can do these things that she ultimately does in the end. Her reluctance to becoming a Magic Girl seems pretty low, even with everything she knew. I think she woulda asked those questions.

Also, Homura never spilled any of the beans because it never worked before. Madoka had so much doubt in Kyubey, surely it should have dawned on her? It's an acceptable excuse, but not a very good one to me. It kind of depends on how many loops she'd gone through, but there isn't much an indication of that outside of the 4 or so we see. If the manga is different with Homura's writing, though, I can believe that. Doesn't change the anime, though.
