Can some Photoshop savvy turn the white colors in this pape into crimson without damaging the black sign in the center?

I would have liked it a bit darker (like the color of wine) but I guess this will do.
How did you change the color? (I tried adding a new layer with the color and using a layer mask to apply the color and it didn't work quite so well)

GIMP has a neat function that turns the selected color transparent, so I used that and added another layer with the new color. Simple as that

I use GIMP too. which function are you referring to?
I made pic related using the Colorize function over at the Colors tab.

I'm still eternally salty that Photoshop doesn't have color to alpha, it's such a useful feature and I don't want to have to use GIMP and ruin all my layers every time I want it.
