>What is minimalism?
Minimalism involves taking images and reducing them down to basic colors and removing most features. Most wallpapers will not include shadowing or faces, but this is subjective.

>Guide to Making Your Own
http://www.deviantart.com/art/Vector-Wallpaper-Tutorial-399883993

>Software
Use either Illustrator or Inkscape (both are free if you know what I mean).

>Requesters
1) Do not post images with incredibly intricate designs, vague or conflicting colors, or undefined edges, these make minimalizing very difficult.
2) Be sure to thank the artist!

>Artists
1) Always upload as at least 1080p PNGs, try and post transparents too.
2) Look over other people's works! We need good criticism if we want to improve!
3) Watermarks/signatures are not highly necessary.

Alright, I'm here with the updated archive:

https://mega.nz/#!TxhkBaBB!He6hIwgFurx282C3JjYyrXSlDSfJoXgZ9fEX6WVWQro

123 new additions! A majority of those can be attributed to this anon providing his personal collection >>1913975 , so give him your thanks when you have a chance.

This brings the total works to a whopping 402! Now some of these MAY be duplicates as the recent large addition may include some that have already been saved, so that is something to keep in mind.

And guess what? It's been exactly a year since the first archive! We started with a 100 files; and within one year quadrupled that number. This is thanks to the hard efforts of the veterans who stick around thread after thread; fulfilling requests. And the people who are new, patient, and willing to take advice in order to improve from those who have the time to teach and critique.

Being a part of these threads this past year has been an enjoyable routine for me. This may not be the fastest thread, but the pleasant efforts of all involved have created some amazing things. You have my gratitude.

Again, thank you everyone, and keep up the great work!

Not him either, but most of it is good. Just one mistake with the ahoge. Since you did this from a fairly poor vector trace, I can't blame you for copying what it was like in that image, but for the tips of hair, you want them to thin out and sharpen in a certain direction. Adjust the handles so that they are closer together, but also curving to the left.

First thing is the use of transparency. You should not use transparency for shading. If you want your image to preserve different shades then every shade should be it's own shape and solid color: The same way you separate skin and cloth.
Using the only shaded image in the thread as an example. (>>1914259) The shaded parts are their own solid color. Also, the shades follow the cloth ALL the way to the edge. No transparencys would be used for this. I barley made any marks on the body of the image, but like on the right arm how the darkest part hovers away from the edge, and on the right thigh how the shade ends early. The use of transparency also causes you a lot of issues. The yellow circle shows areas where your shade goes off the hair itself, or overlaps another shade to look funny (left armpit). Don't try to mimic every shade with a transparent overlay, and instead use just 2 solid shades of your main color.

Second issue it don't go overboard with detail. The main point of doing this is to remove detail and make things clean (hand trying to separate fingers). This image would look good with 2 shades for her shirt, but it has at least 10.

now here's some smaller things;
try to keep hair smooth with few nodes. The green shapes show the areas that looked off with examples.
for the cord I made a line with the pen tool and made the line colored instead of filling the shape. This isn't how long lines are meant to be done in vectors but it's a good cheat.
lastly skin color will almost always look really bad when taken right from the image. your skin color is a de-saturated yellow, and the square over it is a more-saturated red.

Short version; if you don't use transparency and don't go overboard with shades your images will start to look really good.

Also for shading, look into how to make clipping masks. Basically making one shape that outlines the part, and then the shapes under it get cutoff. Hope the wall of text doesn't come off aggressive.

it doesn't really, the wall of text is helpful and I prefer this to a couple lines just telling me whats wrong

thanks anon
>>
>>1922387
Either no shadow shades or just one. You can look though >>1914048 for examples of how often shades are used and how.
Personally I think most look best without an extra shade to each color, but If you like that style I'd keep it to just the main shade and one darker.

>>1922801
Use as few nodes as possible. Make sure every node has a pair of handles. Be smart and use layers.

You won't be able to really understand all of this through text, so play with it and post the result. It will be terrible, but it doesn't take long to get decent at minimalism images.

The rest of this stuff is just going to get better as you learn how to use the program and the pen tool, but here are some things.
First is the bag's pins. Making an ellipse with the circle tool and tilting it makes a smooth object that fits the shape in the image. The star was made with a hump copy/pasted five times. Try to keep track of what the image intended the object to look like and not what the pixels look like. The example rabbit has circle eyes and the green pin is a pattern.
The chain on her bag looks like a line of circles in the original. Black outlines and small size makes it look different when traced. The Closer example chain keeps the same number of 'beeds', and the other makes them the same size but uses more.
Second is areas where you can see where your nodes are (Yellow circles). Always try to use as few nodes as possible, but when you must use a node midway try to make it smooth so that if flows into the next.
Third is line thickness. Line thickness is a bit tricky which is why I would use the line tool cheat for the cord, but it can't be done for the bag's green outline or sleeve pattern. The red arrows show some areas where things get thicker/thinner where they should be constant.
I just now looked at the original image, and this is a really bad one for trying to include shades. shading fades in a lot here so there isn't always a distinction between a single shaded/non shaded area. Anyway, because you did try to include shade it draws attention to un-shaded areas. The blue circle is shaded in the original but now yours. It looked off due to how bumpy the sleeve was without the shade showing the folds. Lastly remember to keep hair going form thick to thin. The lower one looks off because it folds in the original, but it's such a minor detail that it looks a bit better when changed.
Only really looked at the bag area of the image this time, but you get the idea.

Since you'd be using the shapes, you just put the lines in the middle of the pixels, and the shape comes out. True, it'd need tweaking, but it would be better than trying to do this as a true vector image that keeps all the details...

You have significant color peeking all around the face and hands. Make proper layers and completely fill in the hair. Then, make the layer for the face under the hair, and the layer for the hand and sweater above the hair.

To creators: Do you guys like to include shadings as part of your work or do you just simplify the color into the base shade?
>>
>>1938191
>>1938192

Creator of >>1914993 here. I personally prefer shading, all depending on the original image.
Images like >>1937700 is fine without shading for me, because the image still maintains a lot of other details.
As for the one I had made earlier ITT. Had it not been shaded, I would've disliked the lack of "detail" per say.
Of course this is still subjective, so others may feel differently
>>
>>1938222
It depends on how "minimalist" you want to go, and what details you are sacrificing to do so.

That was why I didn't put in the eyes for the Mirror's Edge image I did.

If I had something where there was not enough to not make everything look like an amorphous blob, then I would pull in shadows, as well.

It is very infrequently I would add in eyes, unless it was key to the image, like a wink. As you noticed, I COULD have left out the lips, but man, those lips...
>>
>>1938288
i agree when it comes to eyes, all my works up to now has no eyes placed, except for a Tokyo Ghoul Kaneki one, where I had to make the eye stand out as the subject, but detail-wise like you said it depends on how minimalist you want to go. I sometimes like to make a more artistic looking wallpaper thus I add in the shadings, but if I want to make something like a display picture or something less noticeable I'd just go full minimalist. I've only started this minimalistic wallpaper thing, The r>>1937665

First off, I'd soften the eye like I hacve done, and you can't see it well, but the top gum line removed he sharp points - gums do NOT look like thye are sharp! I also, if you can see it, softened the tooth edges and added in some roundness instead of just straight lines - the straight likes deter form it looking like "real" teeth, and loses some of the definition, and draws the eye too much to it.

Yoiur hair needs to be redone - I'd suggest trying it both the way yo are now with the obscene color changes, as well as just the "primary" light gray color, and another variant of the light gray and one of the dark grays (I'd suggest the lighter one) so that the eye stands out more.

Hope this helps.

I have clip studio paint pro, is it possible to do the same technique as on Adobe illustrator to make minimalist drawing ?

>>
>>1941374
You probably could but it looks fairly limited from the videos I watched. It would be best to pirate Illustrator CC and do it from there.
>>
>>1941376
So do you advise me to watch some videos to see how it works ?
Cause I've done some minimalist drawing but I have to draw all the character without the original model
>>
>>1941377
Not sure what you mean. There is a tutorial in the OP for Illustrator that shows you how to do it with the original model. I don't know why you would have to do it without the original model.
>>
>>1941378
Because I simply don't know how to export a picture on clip studio.. T.T
>>
>>1941380
There is probably a way, but I only have experience in Illustrator and Inkscape, so I can't help you outside of those two programs. Those two are 100% geared to vectors, so they have much more options.
>>
>>1941374
If you cannot find/do not want to download illustrator, you an use inkscape - Go to the vector thread and watch the tutorials there for inkscape. Once you do that, making shapes for the hair, etc. will be easier than doing the lines, as well...

Yo

I'm sorry to ask in here, but six months ago or so i visited this board and found an awsome wallpaper.

It was one of these, a minimalist wallapaper with an anime girl in a red dress with a black background.
The girl was standing in the middle of the screen.

Only the outlines were visible, so no face and so one.

I have googled and everything. I think it was a custom wallpaper.

First time's always tough. Alright so as you can see with your background, there are color gaps everywhere. These are locations where the edges of different sections fail to meet, causing the background to peek through. I've highlighted some of these in red. Whenever you get close to finishing, check for these gaps using an odd color background and patch them up. It seems you're making the classic mistake of considering each section separate and cutting off their edges when it meets a different color. However, these lines are near impossible to judge and you will often miss your mark. I will refer to the next post on how to fix this.

Other points involve the common tip: less nodes more curves. Replicating the exact lineart makes these look bad, so try to use as many curves as possible instead of creating a new node for every slight bend in the figure. This is noticeable in the hair, which looks very jagged.

Speaking of jagged, are you using a vector program for this? You've got rezzing all over the place, doesn't look smooth at all. You've also managed to skip over alot of the details necessary for detail, like colors in the clothes, or the hairpin. You've also managed to completely fuck up the color scheme of the original picture. Use the color picker and stick to the most prevalent color in that section.

>>1944593
In reference to the color gapping, use the priority of different sections. Whichever section you complete last will be the one to sit on top of the other sections in that layer. This means that you can cross earlier sections into later sections and have those parts not show up. This prevents color gaps by ensuring that all sections connect. Using this, you only need to draw an edge once.

There are 30 desktop threads up right now.
12 haven't even reached bump limit.

Those are NOT DESKTOP THREADS.

Desktop threads are pure cancer shitting up our board and something needs to be done about this.

BUMP THIS THREAD >>1947607 (Cross-thread)

There are 30 desktop threads up right now.

25/30 have not reached post NOR picture limits as of

This shit has got to stop, it's pushing dozens of threads of the board weekly that are complying with the rules.

If your sick of this please submit a post to feedback, and also said thread!

I don't have any Minimalist's to share, so I wanted to thank all the contributers that help out here. You guys truly are great.

Why? You don't need clipping masks to do this shit. Just make shapes in the right priority order, and it makes itself!
>>
>>1952498
Regardless, the patterning and organization took time.
>>
>>1952498
The pattern on the red is copied because they were all the same. The flowers were not, but the individual peddles technically are. Sorry for triggering the inferiority complex, anon.
>>1952499
You are entirely misinformed.
>>
>>1952511
>You are entirely misinformed.
I made this:

>>1937700
AND I am a regular in the vectors thread. If you are using a clipping mask on simple objects with no gradient mesh, YOU, sir, are the one that is misinformed.

There are no gradient meshes, and it is all arbitrary colors with no complex gradients.

>The pattern on the red is copied because they were all the same. The flowers were not, but the individual peddles technically are. Sorry for triggering the inferiority complex, anon.

So you wasted time by NOT doing a simple copy-paste then simply resizing and repositioning the appropriate pieces. What a pleb. The whole point to aPATTERN on a print is IT IS A PATTERN, meaning that if they use one flower for something, they silkscreen the same goddamned flower somewhere else it is needed.

I take it back: you're not a pleb, you're a fucking moron. have fun wasting your time instead of working smart.

>>1952808
Let me try to break this down for you.
Because I want the background and some complex shapes to end at the exact same smooth line I trace the shape, then put the copy-pasted petals/patterns in place, then put the background under it and click clipping mask. Your suggestion was to "Just make shapes in the right priority order." But if I traced that gold pattern it would look worse and different than the other patterns. It would also be harder to get all of it's pieces to end on the same smooth line. Seems to make more sense to not waste time and just do the simple copy-paste method doesn't it?

The facts that the flowers were not just copy-pastes of each other seems to have you upset, but I think you may have misunderstood that as well. You see each flower in the original picture is slightly different. As I said the peddles are copied, but the flowers were not. What I mean is that every single peddle in the image is copied from the first made, but each flower had it's peddles and inner circles moved/resized/rotated. The flowers are not identical, thus they were not just copy-pasted as a whole.

Also, Thanks for the first 4 lines of your post. It made me feel incredibly smug.

If anything, you could have just used the pathfinder tool to physically clip the items at the point. Another thing you could have done, was prioritize your fills. If you had made the greens above the red and as separate shapes, you could then just wedge the yellow discs under the shape.

In this case again, making all tose sakura flowers into one object that you copy would have saved you more time.

I see I am not going to change your feeble mind but in the future IF you decide to do it smarter:
* Make the object you're going to be using to cut overhead in Pathfinder, and make a copy of it.
* Put it over the parts you want clipped, then clip one of the objects.
* After that Paste in place, and rinse/repeat. This not only gets rid of excessive material on your pallette, but then you don't have to worry about what is under it or if it moves, it fucking something else up.

It's sad you don't even know how to use your tools.

Alright, I need more vectoring practice, so I'll continue doing more minimalist stuff.

Checked the entire thread and picked a bunch of old unfulfilled requests (literally months old ones), so I won't be getting to the newer ones any time soon, hopefully there are others who can be bothered to do those.

Had a poor work ethic for the last six transparents I posted here (started learning inkscape less than a week ago, so focus was elsewhere), but now I put my game face on.

Would have been better if it was a full shot of Chiya rather than a facial shot. With a full shot, you could place it anywhere along your picture of choice, but with a facial shot, you're kind of forced to have it take up the whole screen, which in turn, in my opinion, sort of defeats the purpose of minimalism.
